Description

This unit focuses on weighing and measuring, making three dishes to refine food skills. Historical context and science through food is explored during cooking activity.

Accurate weighing and measuring is essential, so that recipes can be replicated, as well as cook safely and thoroughly. Historical context highlights how our food is woven in our society, and changes over decades, and The science of food thread explores how and why ingredients change when cooked. The use of numeracy builds on counting ingredients and using spoons as a measure in earlier cooking units. In Year 5, the thread of Food preparation and cooking focuses on being creative and how recipes can be modified for different people and occasions.

  1. Making Irish soda bread
  2. Making Glamorgan sausages
  3. Making raisin and banana cookies
