Why this why now
Food production and processing supports the food needs of countries throughout the world, whether domestically or on a larger scale. Knowing how food is produced, and how and why food is processed, enables us to make informed choices about the food we buy, prepare, cook and eat. This builds on previous unit's learning around Food origins and provenance, Consumer awareness, and Sustainability. Pupils progress this learning through examining the importance of how and why food is stored, prepared and cooked for safety in Year 6.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils can name and locate food which is from the UK.
- Pupils can name and locate food which is from outside the UK.
- Pupils know that some food can be grown (produced) at home.
- Pupils can name and sort foods that are grown, reared and caught.
- Pupils can describe the origins of different foods.
