Description

In the unit pupils apply key healthy eating messages to their own and others' diets. They examine and use food labels to make healthier choices, and calculate the energy and nutrients provided by a recipe that they make.

Making informed food and drink choices, in meaningful and practical ways, is vital for healthier lives. Building on investigating energy and nutrients, and their food sources and functions for health in Year 5, strategies can be used to make informed choices for ourselves and others through reading food labels, and applying healthy eating and nutrition advice. In Year 7 these strategies are developed, using the Eatwell Guide to justify food and drink choices for different people and occasions.

  1. Health and wellbeing
  2. Food labels for health
  3. Making bean and plantain stew

  • Pupils can explain why we need energy and name different nutrients.
  • Pupils are able to explain that food and drinks provide nutrients, fibre and water, and that they have different functions.
  • Pupils can use the Eatwell Guide to talk about the foods needed to be healthy.
  • Pupils can suggest improvements to meals (with reasons).
  • Pupils will know that a food allergy is when the body reacts unusually to specific foods.
