Description

Students consider what makes a democracy, they explore key features of democracy in the UK and consider how those in power are held to account.

This unit builds on pupils prior learning about what a democracy is. Pupils take a more in-depth look at how democracy works in the UK by exploring what parliament is, how we can hold those in power to account and the role of the press and media and select committees within democracy. The unit encourages critical thinking about governance, representation and citizens rights.

  1. How can we tell if the UK is democratic?
  2. What is Parliament and what are its functions?
  3. How can we hold our leaders to account?
  4. What is a free press and why is it important for democracy?
  5. How is devolution impacting the UK's democracy?
  6. How can I take part in the democratic process? The role of select committees
