This unit uses and builds on pupils' knowledge of GPCs (grapheme phoneme correspondences) from any Year 1 phonics scheme that has been followed. Pupils learn new GPCs for long vowel sounds, learning relevant rules and how to apply new spellings in a sentence context. This unit prepares pupils for the Year 2 unit 'Year 2: Alternative GPCs for consonants and homophones'.
Prior knowledge requirements
- The primary grapheme phoneme correspondence (GPC) for all 40+ phonemes.
- The alternative representations of the long vowel sounds and some consonants.
- The ability to blend and segment words.
- The spelling of common exception words (English Appendix 1).
- The ability to divide words into syllables.
