1 July 2026Teaching something new next year? Five ways to get ahead before September

Katie Marl
Delivery Lead & Primary Specialist
The final weeks of the school year often bring a mix of reflection, celebration and anticipation. For many teachers, they're also when next year's timetable starts to take shape.
Maybe you're moving to a new year group. Perhaps you're teaching a different key stage, taking on a new subject, or covering content you've never taught before. Whatever the change, it's a chance to learn something new, and it's perfectly normal to wonder where to start.
Getting up to speed takes time. You'll want to build your subject knowledge, understand what pupils have already learned, anticipate common misconceptions and find resources you can trust.
That's where Oak can help. We have curriculum plans and teaching resources for every national curriculum subject across key stages 1-4. We’re free for you to use – and always will be.
1. Get clear on what pupils will learn
One of the biggest challenges when teaching something new is understanding the bigger picture. What should pupils already know? What comes next? Which concepts are likely to be challenging?
Before diving into lesson planning, explore Oak’s free curriculum plans and lesson resources to quickly understand how topics fit within wider curriculum sequences and the knowledge and skills pupils will develop over time. Having that overview can make individual lessons feel much less daunting.
2. Start with a strong foundation
Building every lesson from scratch isn't always realistic, especially when you're preparing for a new role or responsibility.
Designed by subject and curriculum experts and tested by teachers, Oak's lesson planning and teaching resources provide a strong starting point. You'll find editable slide decks, worksheets, quizzes and teaching guidance that you can use straight away or adapt for your pupils, school context and teaching style.
3. Learn from subject experts
When you're teaching unfamiliar content, knowing ‘what’ to teach is only part of the challenge. Knowing ‘how’ to explain it can be just as important.
Oak's lesson resources include teacher-led videos for inspiration, teacher tips, keywords and common misconceptions, giving you insight into how experienced subject specialists approach a topic.
It's a quick way to strengthen your own understanding and gather ideas before stepping into the classroom.
4. Use AI to bridge knowledge gaps quickly
If you're preparing for unfamiliar content, our AI tools can help you create, adapt and enhance resources in minutes.
You stay in control throughout the process and your professional judgement shapes your lesson, our AI tools just take the more time-consuming aspects off your plate. Whether you're adjusting content for a different reading age, creating a glossary or generating a starter quiz from scratch, it's a practical way to build confidence and save time.
5. Make future-you's life easier
The start of term is busy enough without scrambling for resources when plans change unexpectedly.
Having trusted materials ready to use can make it easier to respond to the realities of school life, whether that's adapting a lesson at short notice, setting cover for another teacher if you’re unwell, or providing remote learning support on a snow day.
Oak lessons can be shared directly with pupils to access in our pupil area. It only takes seconds to select and send resources such as videos, worksheets and quizzes to your pupils to complete outside of the classroom.
Pupils can take a starter quiz to check prior knowledge, watch a video of the lesson being taught by a teacher and take an exit quiz to check what they’ve learnt. They’ll receive real-time feedback on their quiz answers too and can use a hint function if needed. Then you can see their progress with our easy results-sharing function.
Start September with confidence
Teaching a new year group, key stage or subject will always come with a learning curve. But you don't have to start from scratch.
Whether you're exploring curriculum plans, adapting lesson resources, building subject knowledge or using AI tools to speed up preparation, Oak can help you feel more confident and prepared for the year ahead.
