Sir Ian Bauckham CBE

Chair

Sir Ian has worked in education since graduating from Cambridge University. He has been closely involved in Oak from the outset and served as interim Chair since the launch of the arm’s length body in September 2022.

Sir Ian was recently appointed Chief Regulator at Ofqual, previously being CEO of Tenax Schools Trust. He has led modern foreign language departments, a sixth form and was headteacher of a large comprehensive in Kent.

Before his appointment as Chief Regulator, Sir Ian was Chair of Ofqual, and has been closely involved in the reforms to teacher professional development, including the Early Career Framework and the new National Professional Qualifications.

He has worked closely with the Department for Education, leading reform of Relationships and Sex Education, Modern Foreign Languages Pedagogy and GCSE reviews, and the recent Initial Teacher Training Market Review.

Sir Ian is a Trustee of Sabre Charitable Trust, an early years educational charity working in Ghana. He was made a CBE in 2017 for services to education and awarded a knighthood in the 2022 New Year's Honours list.
