Finding one more and one less with manipulatives and images

You can find one more and one less with manipulatives and images.

      Lesson details

      Key learning points

      1. Secure understanding of one more and one less using a variety of manipulatives and pictures.
      2. Use stem sentences including one more than and one less than.

      Keywords

      • One more - The next number in the count is one more than the number before and there will be one more object in the set.

      • One less - The previous number in the count is one less than the next number and there will be one fewer object in the set.

      Common misconception

Incorrect sequence of counting when recalling the next and previous numbers.

Start with parts of the sequence where pupils are confident to secure the concept of counting on for one more and back for one less.

Encourage pupils to see patterns when arrays, grids and bead strings are used to display numbers and ask them to identify the one more or the missing one when the image displays one less or fewer.
