      Writing descriptive sentences

I can write descriptive sentences using adjectives and powerful verbs.

      Lesson details

      Key learning points

      1. An adjective describes a noun. Adjectives are often put in front of the noun in a sentence, such as 'green forest'
      2. Using descriptions with adjectives makes writing more interesting
      3. Verbs are doing or being words
      4. Verbs are chosen carefully to help us imagine how someone has done something, such as “whizzed”
      5. Adjectives can describe the appearance of someone or something as well as the personality of someone

      Keywords

      • Describe - add detail do

      • Noun - a naming word for people, places or things

      • Adjective - describes a noun

      • Verb - a doing or being word

      • Personality - the special qualities that make a character themselves

      Common misconception

Children may not write or speak in the past tense.

Consistently use sentence stems for the children to build their descriptive sentences from that are always in the past tense.

Teach the Year 1 Word Class Grammar unit alongside this unit for discrete grammar teaching in order to apply this learning to the children's writing. To demonstrate verbs, act out each action to show they are doing or being words.
