Internet of Things
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can explain how devices share data in the internet of things (IoT) and how this can have an impact on privacy.
Key learning points
- The internet of things (IoT) connects everyday objects to the internet, enabling them to collect and share data.
- Personal information is information collected about a person.
- Understand that connected devices can gather and share your personal information, which can impact your privacy.
Keywords
Internet of things (IoT) - a network of everyday devices that are connected to the internet and can communicate with each other
Privacy - the protection of an individual's personal information and the control over how it is used
Common misconception
The internet of things (IoT) is only about smart homes and appliances.
IoT are everyday devices that are connected to the internet and can communicate with each other. They might not collect data for the same purpose but they can collect information about how people use the devices.
Teacher tip
Find examples of 'free' internet services that pupils might use. Discuss what information could be collected as part of their use and then ask the class to decide how companies make money from these free services.

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom. Plus, you can set it as homework or revision for pupils and keep their learning on track by sharing an online pupil version of this lesson.
