Keywords
Emotions - strong feelings - like love, or anger
Imagery - the use of language to create a mental picture or sensory experience for the reader or listener
Metaphor - a way of describing and comparing something by saying that it is something else
Simile - a poetic device that compares two things using ‘like’ or ‘as’
Common misconception
Pupils may try to vary their voice so much that it makes them difficult to hear e.g. speaking too quickly or too quietly.
Explain to the pupils that while we are trying to convey emotions through our voice, we also need to maintain a loud enough and clear enough volume for the audience to hear us. Model doing this well and not so well.
Teacher tip
The book 'Poems Aloud' is full of illustrations to bring the poems to life. Displaying the poems alongside their illustrations on the interactive whiteboard would enhance engagement and understanding.
