Why this why now
This unit uses and builds on the prior unit, 'Humorous Poetry', where pupils explored a range of humorous poems and read them aloud with expression to create meaning. In this unit, pupils will continue to develop their poetry performance skills. They will watch different poets perform their own poems and learn from them about what makes an effective performance. This unit prepares pupils for 'Poet focus: Joseph Coelho', where they will concentrate on one poet and how he evokes different emotional responses from the reader.

In this unit, pupils read, respond to and perform a variety of poems by different poets. They will watch the poets perform their own poems and learn from them about what makes an effective performance. Finally, pupils will practise different skills to perform each poem effectively to an audience.
