Rich vocabulary associated with looking or seeing

Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can effectively use the words ‘scrutinise’, ‘glimpse’ and other rich vocabulary associated with looking or seeing.

Key learning points

  1. 'Scrutinise' is a verb, which means to inspect or study.
  2. 'Glimpse' is a verb, which means to spot or get a quick look.
  3. 'Peer', 'squint', 'gawk' and 'gaze' are other verbs related to looking or seeing.

Keywords

  • Noun - a naming word for people, places or things

  • Verb - a being, doing or having word

  • Adverb - a word that can describe a verb or an adjective

  • Synonym - a word that has the same or similar meaning to another word

  • Word pair - words that often appear together

Common misconception

Some of the word pairs will need extra explanation such as 'squint suspiciously'.

Provide an example of when someone might 'squint suspiciously'. For example, 'She squinted suspiciously at the unfamiliar figure lurking in the shadows, unsure of their intentions.'

Teacher tip

Start this lesson by showing some images of people looking at something and generate synonyms for the verb 'look'. You can then refer back to this if any of the taught words match these words.
