Key learning points
- 'Devour' is a verb which means to eat hungrily or gobble up.

- 'Savour', inhale', 'guzzle' and 'gorge' are other verbs related to eating.
Keywords
Noun - a naming word for people, places or things
Verb - a being, doing or having word
Synonym - a word that has the same or similar meaning to another word

Common misconception
Pupils might think all 6 verbs can be used interchangeably.
Ensure pupils understand the nuances of each verb by studying the word pairs carefully. For example, 'guzzle' is the verb that is mainly associated with liquids.
Teacher tip
Start the lesson by asking pupils to act out eating different foods. Ask them how else you could describe it, other than 'eating'. Write down any ideas that the pupils generate.
