Is my money safe?
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I understand that money has a value and needs to be kept safe.
Key learning points
- Coins have a value which is independent of their size, shape, colour or mass.
- Money has value so needs to be kept safe and looked after.
Keywords
Coin - A coin is a small flat piece of metal used as money.
Wallet - A wallet is a small, flat, folding case made of leather or plastic used for keeping paper money and credit cards in.
Safe - Safe means to be protected from any danger, harm or loss.
Common misconception
The experience of carrying cash will greatly vary at this age and some children might not have used coins before.
Start by drawing on the children's experiences so that you can successfully pitch the discussions prompted in the lesson. If necessary, get them to have a go at carrying coins in the ways mentioned in the slide deck - good or bad.
Teacher tip
Make sure you get the children to explain their reasoning when comparing safe places to store money. For example, you might want to get them to reason why a zip pocket is better than an unzipped pocket. This will help them to develop their responsibility for keeping money safe.
