      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can explain the links between levels of development and demography.

      Key learning points

      1. Countries at different levels of development have differences in their demographic characteristics.
      2. The different demographic characteristics include birth rate or fertility rate, death rate and population structure.
      3. A population pyramid enables us to compare population structure of different countries.
      4. The economic impact of different population structures may be understaod by calculating the dependency ratio.
      5. There are links between the stages of the Demographic Transition Model and the level of development.

      Keywords

      • Demography - the study of population: its size, composition and change over time

      • Birth rate - the number of births for every 1000 people in a population per year

      • Natural increase - when a population grows in size as result of the birth rate being higher than the death rate

      • Population pyramid - an age-sex graph used to present the structure of a population (that may resemble a pyramid)

      • Demographic transition model - a theoretical model that suggests how birth rate, death rate and total population change over time

      Common misconception

That there are few people who live to 65 years and beyond in LICs and NEEs.

It is the proportion of the population that is small not the actual number of people. Some LICs and NEEs have large populations so there are millions of people who reach the age of 65 years plus.

      Teacher tip

This topic provides the opportunity for students to practise interpreting bar graphs and line graphs; and link the data to the 'story' of a country's development. You may wish to set a research task using online resources.
