Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Some conjunctions trigger word order 3 and send the verb to the end of the clause.
      2. In two-verb structures with WO3, the finite verb, not past participle or infinitive, is sent to the end of the clause.
      3. Two-verb structures occur with modal verbs, the future tense with 'werden' and the perfect tense with 'haben' or 'sein'.
      4. Useful WO3 conjunctions include 'weil', 'dass', 'obwohl', 'solange', 'sobald' and 'falls'.

      Keywords

      • Conjunction - word that connects ideas between clauses in a sentence

      • Two-verb structure - finite verb appears with a second verb, as infinitive or past participle at the end of the clause or sentence

      • Word order 1 (WO1) - subject - verb - object - the standard word order in a German sentence, e.g., 'Ich lerne Deutsch'

      • Word order 3 (WO3) - after certain conjunctions, the verb is sent to the end of the sentence or clause

      Common misconception

Whenever two-verb structures are used, the second verb - the infinitive or the past participle - always goes to the end of the clause or sentence.

The second verb goes to the end with normal word order and WO1 conjunctions like 'und', 'aber', 'oder' and 'sondern'. But with WO3 conjunctions, the main or finite verb is sent to the end of the clause.

      Teacher tip

Learning Cycle 1 contains both Foundation and Higher vocabulary but is structured to support all students. It provides an insight into challenges facing ill people. Learning Cycle 2 contains Higher Tier grammar. Teachers could develop LC2 further with pairwork speaking on challenges for ill people.
