Explain the relationship between the mean and sharing equally

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can explain the relationship between the mean and sharing equally.

      Key learning points

      1. The mean is the size of each part when a quantity is shared equally.
      2. The mean value of a set of data is the total of the numbers divided by how many numbers there are.

      Keywords

      • Mean average - The mean average is a single number expressing the typical value in a set of data. It is calculated by finding the total of the set of data and dividing by how many values there are.

      • Set of data - A set of data is collection of facts, such as numbers, words, measurements, observations or even just descriptions of things.

      Common misconception

Understanding that the mean average is a way of creating one value to represent a set of data. It is calculated by sharing equally but doesn't always mean that a set is being shared.

Be clear about what the mean average value represents and how it might be useful in the contexts presented.

      Teacher tip

The lesson starts with data that can be added and divided mentally so that pupils can focus on what is happening to the data. Encourage them to notice and describe that the total number in the set stays the same but they are re-distributed. The mean average can be a fraction or decimal.
