Composition exemplars: completing a composition
Downloads can take a few minutes, especially for larger files or slower connections.
Why this why now
This unit brings together pupils’ compositional learning by focusing on how composers complete and refine finished work. Using exemplar compositions, pupils explore idiomatic writing, instrumental considerations, performance directions and use of technology. This supports GCSE composition by helping pupils refine and finalise their own work, considering accuracy, detail and stylistic control.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils understand how repetition, contrast and development create structure.
- Pupils can use melodic, harmonic and rhythmic devices to develop ideas.
- Pupils understand how texture, timbre and instrumentation shape composition.
- Pupils can apply stylistic conventions appropriate to different genres.
- Pupils understand basic performance directions and musical notation.
- Pupils can use music technology tools in simple compositional contexts.
- Pupils can analyse exemplar compositions using appropriate musical vocabulary.
- Pupils have experience refining and improving their own compositions.
