Introduction to performance

Downloads can take a few minutes, especially for larger files or slower connections.

Why this why now

This unit introduces the performance component of the GCSE course, giving pupils structured time to develop and refine their instrumental or vocal skills. It follows composition and listening units by shifting focus to the practical application of musical understanding in performance. Pupils explore the requirements of effective performance, develop effective practice strategies, and begin to make informed choices about repertoire. This builds confidence and control ahead of the assessed performance component.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils can perform simple pieces on their chosen instrument or voice.
  • Pupils understand basic musical elements including rhythm, pitch, tempo and dynamics.
  • Pupils can follow a score or lead sheet appropriate to their instrument.
  • Pupils understand basic musical notation relevant to their instrument.
  • Pupils have experience of performing individually or in a group.
  • Pupils can maintain a steady pulse in performance.
  • Pupils can respond to musical instructions and teacher feedback.
  • Pupils have developed basic coordination or instrumental technique appropriate to their instrument.
  • Pupils can identify areas for improvement in their own work.
  • Pupils have experience of practising short musical passages or pieces.
