Attacking and defending in small sided netball games

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can attack and defend to help my team when playing in a game of netball.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: to outwit our opponents we can use attacking skills such as dodging to find space in order to receive a pass.
      2. Move: when our team loses possession we need to react quickly and mark a player to stop our opponents scoring.
      3. Think: working as a team to try different tactics to score more points demonstrates excellent resourcefulness.
      4. Feel: keeping accurate score throughout a game shows that we are maintaining high standards and playing with integrity.
      5. Connect: being able to manage the game ourselves and consistently stick to the rules shows respect for everyone.

      Keywords

      • Attack - trying to score points or goals

      • Defend - preventing the opposition (attackers) from scoring

      • Tactics - a carefully planned set of actions that are used by a team or an individual to achieve a certain goal

      Common misconception

As it is a competition, pupils tend to forget what they have learnt and rush decisions around passing and shooting. Pupils get frustrated if not winning.

Pupils have up to 4 seconds, so encourage them to take their time when making decisions. Award bonus points for pupils playing with integrity.

      Teacher tip

The explanation is long in this lesson as the pupils will be applying all of the points through games. Therefore, chunking the information and drip feeding some of the points in throughout the games will help pupils' understanding.
