Passing and receiving skills
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can pass and receive the ball accurately to help my team keep possession.
Key learning points
- Move: moving into space and always being ready to receive a pass is important to keep possession of the ball.
- Move: accurate passing requires stepping into the pass and looking at your partner's target.
- Think: concentration is important to improve accuracy when passing and receiving the ball to keep possession.
- Feel: always working hard and trying your best demonstrates self motivation.
- Connect: treating teammates with respect makes the task more enjoyable and increases our chance of being successful.
Keywords
Passing - transferring the ball from one player to another
Accuracy - the ability to control where we send a ball
Possession - the team in control of the ball
Common misconception
Pupils panic when there is a defender and kick/strike/throw the ball away quickly to prevent the defender getting too close to them.
Explain that if we panic, we will probably lose possession in a game. Encourage pupils to take their time. Bring in walking defenders instead to slow the game down.
Teacher tip
Select your preferred focus (hands, feet, sticks) and move pupils through the sequence when they are ready in groups. If using hands, limit to chest passes only so pupils learn how to create space and pass around the defender. This is then transferable learning when playing with feet and sticks.
Equipment
1 ball between 2 pupils (the type depends on your focus), 30+ cones, bibs
