      Data collection and presentation

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can describe how data is collected and use various methods to present and plot data.

      Key learning points

      1. Bar charts are plotted by labelling the vertical and the horizontal axis.
      2. Bar charts are drawn with equal width and start from zero on the vertical axis.
      3. Line graphs are drawn by plotting points and connecting them with a line.
      4. Data can be collected with numbers; quantative and with descriptions; qualitative.

      Keywords

      • Quantitative data - a measurement which can be quantified as a number.; there is no expressed opinion; it is a fact

      • Qualitative data - more of a subjective than an objective appraisal; involves opinions relating to the quality of performance rather than the quantity

      Common misconception

Graphs in exam questions will have the x and y axes labelled.

One of the skills assessed in GCSE PE exam questions is to label the x and y axes, as well as plot data and present as the method requested by the question.

      Teacher tip

Tables, bar charts and line graphs will be used in a breadth of curriculum subjects. However, please use the array of topics in the specification to practice ways of presenting data. It is an assessed Ofqual requirement. It is beneficial to make this explicit and 'taught rather than caught'.
