Productos típicos: 'ser' present, nationality adjectives

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use and understand the verb ‘ser’ with nationality adjectives in the context of products and exports from Latin America.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. The present indicative forms of ‘ser’ are ‘soy’, ‘eres’, ‘es’, ‘somos’, ‘sois’ and ‘son’.
      2. Adjectives of nationality must agree with the nouns they describe.
      3. Masculine adjectives ending in -o change to -a, -os- or -as depending on the gender and number of the noun.
      4. Masculine adjectives ending in -és change to -esa, -eses or -esas depending on the gender and number of the noun.

      Keywords

      • Ser - verb meaning 'to be, being' for general traits

      • Adjective - word that gives information about a noun

      • Adjective agreement - when the ending of an adjective matches the noun it describes in gender and number

      Common misconception

In Spanish, all masculine adjectives end in -o.

Many masculine adjectives end in -o, but this is not always the case. For example, many masculine adjectives of nationality end in -és e.g. 'inglés' and 'francés'.

      Teacher tip

If there are several nationalities in your class, slide 10 is an opportunity for pupils to customise the list of nationality adjectives to suit their own context. The phonics of final syllable stress is explained on slide 10 and the corresponding check on slide 12 are aimed at Higher Tier students.
