Targeted GCSE revision support for your pupils

Rachel Strom

Head of School Support

Revision season can mean hours spent creating materials. We have free resources across all national curriculum subjects, and mapped to major exam boards – making it easier to align revision with your curriculum and support every pupil.

Our subject leads have hand-picked some units you may find useful to help your pupils at this time – have a look at these later on in this blog. You can use these in your classroom during revision sessions and to support independent learning and revision. All the units and lessons you can see are also available for pupils to complete online in their own dedicated pupil area.

Oak’s AI lesson assistant, Aila, helps you quickly create targeted revision quizzes and retrieval practice activities, all aligned to the national curriculum and major exam boards. So you can spend less time making resources and more time supporting your pupils where they need it most.

4 bullets that detail benefits of the units for revision. These are: expose common misconceptions, revisit challenging topics, support independent revision, build confidence before exam day

Art and design

Recommended unit: Foundation workshops: an introduction to the areas of study

“This unit offers a range of endorsement pathways (3D Design, Fine Art, Graphic Communications, Photography and Textiles) while enabling students to explore GCSE-style themes such as portraiture and figures, inside and outside, light and dark, and landscapes. Rich in artist references, it models a thematic, inquiry-led approach, allowing students to either follow a focused pathway or work across themes and materials, useful for those still exploring their strengths in Year 10.”

Emily Gopaul, Art and Design Subject Lead

Combined and triple science

Recommended biology unit: Eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells

This unit covers foundational knowledge about plant and animal cells, and can help pupils revise cell structure, function, and the size and scale of cells (including standard form).

Recommended chemistry unit: Atomic structure and the periodic table

This unit covers foundational knowledge about atoms, elements and compounds, as well as how to write and use the standard nuclear notation for different elements and their isotopes. It can also help pupils practice calculating relative atomic mass and relative formula mass.

Recommended physics unit: Measuring and calculating motion

This unit covers foundational knowledge about calculating motion, including understanding vectors, graphs, and the necessary formulae. Each of the 12 lessons in this unit contains worksheets that you could set pupils to build their calculation confidence.

“I’ve picked these units because they really help build the confidence and core knowledge students need to tackle trickier topics!”

Liz Pugh, Science Subject Lead

Citizenship

Recommended unit: Practising what we have learnt

In this unit, pupils get the chance to apply their knowledge across a broad range of key questions, such as ‘What is the UK's relationship with international organisations?’, ‘What does it mean to live in a democracy?’, and ‘What has shaped the identity of the UK?’.

“I recommend this GCSE citizenship unit which provides pupils with the opportunity to revise key concepts and ideas before the examination. These units are deliberately designed to be exam board agnostic, allowing teachers to adapt the language and emphasis to their chosen specification.”

Geoff Wells, Citizenship Subject Lead

Computing

Recommended unit: The internet and web technologies

In this unit, pupils can revisit internet fundamentals, how data travels, as well as consolidating understanding of specific networks and protocols, web technologies, and threats.

“I recommend exploring our GCSE computer science unit on ‘The internet and web technologies’. These lessons break down key concepts such as protocols, network layers and web technologies into clear, exam-focused explanations. They support pupils in applying knowledge to exam questions, understanding technical terminology and strengthening their confidence with core GCSE content, ideal for the lead-up to exams.”

Stuart Davison, Computing Subject Lead

Design and technology

Recommended unit: Designing and making principles

This unit covers a variety of key knowledge that may come up on an exam, such as briefing, materials and manufacturing, costing, health and safety, and product analysis, giving pupils the chance to consolidate areas they’re unsure of.

“I recommend looking at our Year 11 GCSE units on core, technical, and design and making principles. Pupils will develop knowledge and skills with an explicit focus on exam technique. These units are deliberately designed to be exam board agnostic, so teachers can adapt the language and emphasis to their chosen specification.”

Sam Booth, Design & Technology Subject Lead

English

Recommended unit: Macbeth: A Tragic Hero

This unit is one of our Deep Dive units, which are available for set texts across all the modules of the GCSE syllabus, and can help pupils to quickly revisit key themes ahead of exam day.

"I recommend looking at our short 7 lesson GCSE Deep Dive units to support your pupils' English revision, such as this one on Macbeth's role as a tragic hero in the play. These units deepen understanding of the text, extend ideas about key themes and enable pupils to develop richer interpretations."

Chris Fountain, English Subject Lead

Geography

Recommended unit: Natural and tectonic hazards

This unit can help pupils consolidate all their foundational knowledge about tectonic hazards, and is available for both AQA and Edexcel B exam boards.

“I recommend using any of our KS4 geography units to support pupils’ revision, as they cover both key content and exam skills. For example, you might use Natural and tectonic hazards (AQA) or Tectonic hazards (Edexcel B).

“These units will help pupils refresh their understanding of the processes behind tectonic hazards, as well as their impacts in different contexts and how they can be managed. They also provide opportunities for pupils to further develop their skills in spatial analysis, explanation and evaluation.”

Graeme Schofield, Geography Subject Lead

History

Recommended unit: The British sector of the Western Front, 1914–18

This unit can help pupils consolidate their knowledge about the significance of the Western Front, including the conditions, challenges faced by the Chain of Evacuation, and assessing the impact of medical and surgical experiments conducted on the Western Front.

"I recommend looking at any of our KS4 history units to support your pupils' history revision as they cover both content and exam skills. For example, our six lesson "The British sector of the Western Front, 1914–18" unit. This unit will help pupils to refresh their knowledge of this historical environment whilst honing their ability to analyse and evaluate historical sources."

Benjie Groom, History Subject Lead

Maths

Recommended unit: Algebraic manipulation

This unit consolidates pupils’ understanding of algebra concepts like simplifying, substitution, expanding brackets and factorising, rearranging, and linear equations. It also covers factorising and solving quadratic equations.

“I recommend looking at this unit which recaps the basics for algebraic manipulation and develops understanding of factorisation.

In all our units, the lesson videos provide teacher explanations for pupils needing to revisit areas they may have forgotten or need a quick reminder of ahead of exam time.”

Ed Southall, Maths Subject Lead

MFL: French, German and Spanish

Recommended French unit: Communication and the world around us: Révisions: Personnes et lieux

In this French revision unit, pupils revise their vocabulary and grammar with a focus on negation, imperatives, present participles, adjective agreement and adjective and adverb positioning. They also get a chance to revisit all word pattern rules they’ve encountered throughout the course.

Recommended German unit: People and lifestyle: Wiederholung: mein Leben, meine Zukunft

In this German revision unit, pupils apply knowledge on plural nouns, present and perfect tenses, including reflexive and separable verbs, imperfect tense, modals, verbs with prepositions, future tense and 'möcht-'.

Recommended Spanish unit: Studying and my future: Repaso - el colegio y el trabajo

This revision unit covers the present tense in-depth. Pupils revisit 'ser' and 'estar', the present continuous, idiomatic phrases, and use of 'usted'. Pupils also strengthen the preterite and imperfect.

“I’ve picked these units as you can find lessons developing particular skills, listening, speaking, reading or writing on a GCSE theme. They can provide flexible support to build confidence and secure progress.”

Alice Harrison, MFL Subject Lead

Physical education

Recommended unit: Exam technique and answering the extended answer questions

This unit covers exam technique in PE, and in particular supports pupils in their preparation for the 6 and 9 mark questions, developing their AO3 skills.

“I recommend looking at our GCSE PE ‘exam technique and answering extended answer questions’ lessons. They focus on how to apply AO3 knowledge, understand key terms and build clear writing structures and techniques, helping pupils feel more confident tackling the higher-mark questions in an exam.

Louise Hacking, PE Subject Lead

Religious education

Recommended unit: Islam: beliefs

This unit can help your pupils consolidate their understanding of some of the core beliefs of Islam, as well as how these beliefs link together and their influence on a Muslim's life.

"I recommend this unit on beliefs in Islam to support RE revision. Complex concepts are broken down using diagrams and etymology to aid understanding. Case studies show how different Muslims interpret these beliefs in their daily lives and what difference they make. Look at our selection of tasks which break down complex questions and give feedback on answering well."
