Art for change: visual voices

4 lessons

Description

Made in collaboration with October Gallery. the unit explores how artists use visual storytelling to express ideas about people and change. Pupils create symbolic work, experiment with shadow and silhouettes, and design placards that use colour, shape, words, and symbols to share messages.

Pupils will be ready to build on their knowledge by connecting memory, history, protest, and personal expression through more advanced techniques. Pupils can move beyond simply making art to considering how images carry meaning. This unit introduces more complex processes (carbon transfer, silhouette work, screen printing), which stretch their creative skills and prepare them for Key Stage 3.

  1. Unweaving, wrapping, transforming: textile sculpture
  2. Cut, colour, speak: Pop Art placards for protest
  3. Set the scene: collage, figure and symbol
  4. Shadow stories: silhouette, clay and light

  • Basic confidence with cutting, gluing, drawing, and collage.
  • Familiarity with using paint, stencils, and simple printmaking techniques
  • Ability to notice and describe shapes, colours, and symbols in images.
  • Some experience of talking about what an artwork shows or makes them feel.
  • Experience of working in small groups on a shared creative task.
