Future fossils: drawing and sculpture

Description

Pupils will look at the theme of fossils as a starting point for this unit. They make and abstract a drawing of a fossil using chalk pastels and charcoal. Pupils design and make a 3D fossil of the future sculpture using the casting process and design principles.

In previous lessons, pupils learned how to record what they see using lines and shapes. In this unit, they will use charcoal and chalk pastels to record observational lines and shapes, then abstract them into their own original abstract compositions. Pupils have learnt about the work of others and they will now begin to understand how some artists make work about topical issues such as environmental pollution. Pupils will build on their knowledge of manipulating materials to create a sculpture using the casting process and then finish it to a high standard.

  1. Draw fossils in an abstract style
  2. An artist's response to plastic waste
  3. Take a high quality photo using a lightbox
  4. Future fossils discussion and sketchbook work
  5. Make a future fossil sculpture
