Description

Cake is a central part of many cultures and celebrations, with a rich history and symbolic meaning. Pupils will use the subject matter of cakes to develop their drawing and painting skills before designing and making a cake of their own invention in clay.

Pupils awareness of their technical ability is increasing at this age. This unit encourages them to apply the skills that they have acquired for imaginative purposes, and to draw on their own cultural heritage and experiences. It introduces new ceramics techniques, extending their skills and knowledge.

  1. Drawing: observe and draw cakes using charcoal
  2. Sketching and designing a celebration cake
  3. Experimenting with clay for a cake sculpture
  4. Experiment with coil and pinch pot techniques
  5. Build a clay celebration cake
  6. Ceramics: finalising a cake inspired creation
