Clothes and culture: wearable art

4 lessons

Description

The unit brings together diverse visual languages from across time and place, encouraging children to see wearable art not simply as adornment, but as a powerful form of communication, one that carries meaning, celebrates identity, and gives voice to stories that matter.

This unit explores how clothing, sculpture, and pattern can express identity, memory, and resistance. Pupils investigate the body as both subject and structure, using wrapping, dressing, sculpting, and printing to tell visual stories rooted in personal and collective experience.

  1. Wrapping a sculpture: hidden stories
  2. Masque: sculpture, clothes and messages
  3. Clay beads: meanings and patterns
  4. Printing symbols: banners and identity
