Charting self: exploring portrait and identity

5 lessons

Description

In this unit, students explore how to express personal identity through portraiture, material, memory and imagination. Across four expressive lessons, pupils create textured paintings, symbolic surfaces, close-up feature portraits, and expressive self-maps that combine journey and face.

This Year 6 unit supports pupils as they reflect on identity before transitioning to secondary school. Linking emotion with creativity, it explores how culture, history, and place shape us. Pupils build confidence through artist study, expressive making, and personal exploration.

  1. Painting a portrait with colour and feeling
  2. Layer and symbol: surface, texture and identity
  3. Patterns in medieval art
  4. Portraits of power: dots, features and symbolism
