Key learning points
- The 'e' at the end of the word makes no sound (SFE - Silent final e). The consonant before a SFe is pronounced: timide.
- 'Avoir' means to have: j'ai (I have), tu as (you have), il a (he has), elle a (she has). These are its singular forms.
- In English, adjectives come before the noun. In French, most adjectives go after the noun (postnominal adjectives).
- Adjectives must agree with the gender of the noun they describe. We often add an -e in the feminine form: vert - verte.
- Some adjectives, like rapide, end in an e in both the masculine and feminine forms: une voiture rapide.
Keywords
SFe - silent final 'e', a word which ends in a silent 'e': timide
Avoir - French verb meaning 'to have'
Adjective - a word which gives information about a noun
Common misconception
Like in English, adjectives go before the noun in French: a fast car.
Unlike in English, most adjectives go after the noun in French: une voiture rapide.
Use realia from your classroom to revisit different nouns in French (a book, a computer, the teacher, a friend etc.).
