Key learning points
- We use the verb 'avoir' ('to have') when saying ages in French, e.g. 'j’ai neuf ans'.
- 'J'ai' means 'I have', 'je suis' means 'I am'.
- Months of the year are cognates in French and English.
- In French, adjectives often go after the noun, e.g. 'les yeux bleus'.
- Adjectives agree in gender and number with the noun they describe (adjective agreement), e.g. 'les cheveux bouclés'.
Keywords
J'ai - from the French verb 'avoir', meaning 'I have'
Je suis - from the French verb 'être', meaning 'I am'
Adjective agreement - ending of an adjective matching the noun it describes in gender and number
Common misconception
We use the verb 'je suis' ('I am') with ages in French.
When giving ages in French, we in fact use the verb 'j'ai' ('I have'), e.g. 'j'ai neuf ans' ('I have nine years').
Ask pupils to not only present themselves to the class, but to also present a friend or friends, using third person singular of plural of the verbs 'avoir' and 'être'.
