The area of some trapezia can be found by using compound shapes.
It is possible to find a relationship between trapizea and parallelograms.
The relationship between parallelograms and trapezia can be used to deduce the formula for the area of a trapezium.
The formula can be used to calculate the area of a trapezium.

Keywords

Trapezium - A trapezium is a quadrilateral with a pair of parallel opposite sides.
Trapezia/trapeziums - The plural of trapezium can be referred to as trapezia or trapeziums.

Common misconception

Pupils may incorrectly identify the base of the triangle in the trapezium.

Drawing a trapezium on paper, colouring the sides and cutting it will help them see where the base of the triangle comes from.

There is a lot of suggested drawing in this lesson and pupils may benefit from using mini whiteboards for this as they allow pupils to quickly edit their drawings and easily share ideas between them
