Key learning points
- 'Avoir' means 'to have, having', 'j'ai' means 'I have', 'tu as' means 'you have'.
- To ask a question, you can raise the pitch of your voice at the end of a sentence.
- Use 'c'est' plus an adjective or 'c'est' plus 'un/une' and a noun to say what something is.
- [u] sounds like 'tu' and [eu] sounds like 'deux'.
Keywords
Indefinite article - the words ‘un’ and ‘une’, meaning ‘a/an'
Avoir - to have, having
Intonation - the rise and fall of the voice in speaking
[u] - pronounced as in 'tu'
Common misconception
To ask 'do you have ...?' questions we need to know 'do you ...?' in French.
There is no phrase for 'do you ...?'. We use intonation to ask 'do you have ...?' questions.
Teachers may find it helpful to support their teaching of intonation questions by using hand gestures to model rising intonation. Some pupils may find it helpful to use the same gestures themselves initially, as they practise.
