Lesson details
Key learning points
- To compare two numbers, you compare digits with the same place value, starting with the largest place-value digit.
- If the whole numbers are the same, look at the value of the tenths digit to compare and order.
Keywords
Compare - When you compare, you look for similarities and differences in an object or value.
Order - You can order numbers by putting them in a place based on a set rule.
Place value - The value of a digit in a number based on where it is placed is known as place value.
Ascending - Ascending order is when items are arranged from smallest to largest.
Descending - Descending order is when items are arranged from largest to smallest.
Common misconception
Pupils think that because a representation has more images/items then it is a larger number.
Encourage pupils to consider the value of each image/item and say this verbally as ___ wholes and ___ tenths.
Allow pupils to notice that when all of the whole number digits are the same, they don't need to compare one column at a time. They can just go straight to the tenths to compare.
