Key learning points
- Some verbs are followed by prepositions and the accusative case, and some are followed by prepositions and the dative.
- We use different prepositions after verbs in English and German, so verb and preposition combinations must be learnt.
- The prefix 'da(r)-' can be added to prepositions to refer to something already mentioned. This is called a da- compound.
- Use 'wo-' compounds to ask questions with verbs that take prepositions.
- 'Dazu' can be used as a 'da-' compound, but can also be used to mean ‘in addition’ or ‘furthermore’.
Keywords
Preposition - a word that is used before a noun, a noun phrase, or a pronoun, connecting it to another word
Da-, dar- - prefix added to prepositions to avoid repetition of the noun
Wo-, wor- - prefix added to prepositions to form questions
Common misconception
If you know the usual meanings of prepositions, choosing which preposition to use with each verb is straightforward, as we translate the preposition directly from English.
Verb and preposition combinations need to be learnt. The prepositions often lose their usual meaning when combined with verbs, and we often use different prepositions after verbs in English and in German.
