Explain how a combination of different parts can be equivalent to the same whole
I can explain how a combination of different parts can be equivalent to the same whole.
Lesson details
Key learning points
- The same whole can be composed in different ways.
- Different ways of composing the whole are equivalent.
- Expressions can be used to express the combinations of different parts of the whole.
Keywords
Equivalent - Two expressions are equivalent if they have the same value.
Common misconception
Pupils may look at each rod as representing a number rather than focusing on the colour.
Remind pupils that the rods have no numerical value and encourage pupils discuss the rods by their colour name. They may notice proportional relationships but these should not be labelled numerically.
If pupils are unfamiliar with number rods, ensure pupils take time to play with the rods and explore them for themselves, becoming familiar with how they can represent equivalence. Online tools could be used to allow pupils to manipulate number rods.
