- Percentages are parts of the whole.
- Percentages can be represented using one-hundred squares or number lines.

Percent - Percent means the number of parts in each hundred.
Percentage - A percentage is a proportion of a whole.
Common misconception
Pupils may make mistakes when determining the percentage of different wholes that are not equal in size or value.
Talk about the differences between the different wholes explored. Describe percentage as a proportion of that specific whole. Compare two different wholes where the percentages of them are the same and where the percentages of them are different.
Give opportunities to estimate beyond the lesson to develop understanding of percentages. Ask what percentage of the lesson has been covered so far, what percentage of their water bottle they have drunk, etc. Develop understanding that 10% is a very small proportion and 90% is nearly one whole.
