Lesson details
Key learning points
- The whole has been divided into __ equal parts.
- The whole can be one shape or a group of objects.
- A whole can be divided into equal parts in different ways.
Keywords
Whole - The whole is all the parts or everything, the total amount.
Part - A part is some of the whole.
Equal - We say that two or more things are equal if they have the same quantity or value.
Unequal - We say that two or more things are unequal if they do not have the same quantity or value.
Common misconception
Children may have difficulty identifying the number of parts when dealing with cardinality and quantity. For example, dividing a class up into equal groups.
Use a bar model to show a number of children being divided into equal parts. The bar model will then link to the paper strips in the slides.
The focus of this lesson should be on pupils creating their own representations and sharing and discussing these. Allow plenty of time in lesson for pupils to be creative and identify equal parts of different wholes.
