Identify the addends and the sum in column addition

I can identify the addends and the sum in column addition.

      Lesson details

      Key learning points

      1. In column addition, one addend is written below the other.
      2. The equals sign shows it is an equation.
      3. The sum appears within the equals sign.

      Keywords

      • Addend - An addend is a number added to another.

      • Sum - The sum is the total when numbers are added together.

      • Equation - An equation shows that one number or calculation is equal to another.

      • Column addition - Column addition is a way of adding numbers by writing a number below another.

      Common misconception

Pupils may struggle to find the parts and the whole in column addition.

Emphasise the sum as being within the 'equals' sign in column addition. Take time to write equations, bar models and column addition and make connections between these.

Pupils will need to use base ten blocks to represent column addition. There are images that can be used in the session for the tasks but access to manipulatives will be really helpful throughout, as will bar model representations.
