Key learning points

If 4 groups of 2 are equal to 8 then 4 groups of 2 ninths are equal to 8 ninths
__ groups of __ is equal to __
The numerator of the fraction is multiplied by the whole number and the denominator remains the same

Keywords

Represent - To represent something is to show it in a different way.
Numerator - A denominator is the bottom number in a fraction. It shows how many parts a whole has been divided into.
Denominator - A numerator is the top number in a fraction. It shows how many parts we have.
Unitise - Unitising means treating groups that contain or represent the same number of things as units or ones.

Common misconception

Pupils multiply both the numerator and denominator by the whole number.

Ensure pupils are given time to explore how equations are represented using multiple representations and avoiding 'finding the answer' initially. Encourage children to reason how each equation is linked to the representations.

It is important that pupils are able to reach the generalisation for themselves rather than be told the generalisation as a rule for them to follow. Be sure to provide plenty of examples in different contexts and then bring together the equations produced to compare and generalise with.
