Key learning points
- Plural rule 1: most masculine and neuter nouns add ‘-e’ or ‘-e + umlaut’ to form a plural.
- Plural rule 2: masculine and neuter nouns ending in ‘-el’, ‘-en’, ‘-er’ are often the same in the plural.
- Plural rule 3: most feminine nouns add ‘-n’ or ‘-en’ to form a plural.
- Plural rule 4: some masculine and neuter nouns add ‘-er’ at the end and an umlaut on the vowel to form a plural.
Keywords
Plural - refers to more than one of someone or something, e.g., ‘die Frauen’ - 'the women'
Common misconception
Add '-s' to form the plural of all nouns in German.
There is a set of rules that help you know how to form plural nouns in German. Not all nouns form their plural in the same way, so the rules need to be learned.
Encourage students to write their own adaptation of the poem as an extension activity, then listen to others and draw a representation of what they hear.
