      • Year 5

Represent and multiply an improper fraction by a whole number.

I can represent multiplication of an improper fraction using multiplication and repeated addition.

      Lesson details

      Key learning points

      1. Multiplication can be represented as repeated addition
      2. Multiplication can be represented as scaling
      3. Use the language of unitising '__ groups of __ is equal to __'

      Keywords

      • Repeated addition - Repeated addition is the process of adding the same equal group to itself multiple times.

      • Improper fraction - An improper fraction is a fraction where the numerator is greater than the denominator.

      • Represent - To represent something is to show it in a different way.

      Common misconception

Pupil may multiply both the numerator and the denominator by the integer therefore finding an equivalent fraction.

Encourage pupils to represent the maths using unitised counters as this will support them to recognise the multiplicand and the multiplier.

Ensure pupils build on their understanding of multiplying a non-unit fraction by an integer, applying the same generalisation where the numerator can be multiplied by the integer and the denominator stays the same. It is important pupil's realise they can apply this to improper fractions.
