I can round a decimal number with hundredths to the nearest tenth
Lesson details
Key learning points
- Identify the next and previous tenths to the number being rounded
- Identify which tenth is nearest to the number being rounded
- If the value of the hundredths is 5 or greater then round up to the next tenth
- If the value of the hundredths is less than 5, ignore the hundredths and round down to the previous tenth
Keywords
Multiple - A multiple is the result of multiplying a number by an integer. For example 2 × 5 = 10 so 10 is a multiple of 2 and 5.
Previous - Something that comes before something else is known as the previous thing.
Next - Something that comes after something else is known as the next thing.
Rounding - Rounding means making a number simpler but keeping its value close to what it was.
Common misconception
When recording which multiple of 0.1 a number is nearest to, pupils may forget to include the ones.
Make sure pupils have plenty of opportunities to continue counting and rounding with multiples of 0.1 beyond one whole.
Ensure pupils build towards generalising for themselves that when rounding to a specific place value, you look at the value of the digit in the column to the right of the place value you are rounding to. Connect this to prior learning of rounding.
