Keywords
Prefix - a letter or group of letters added to the start of a root word to change its meaning
Root word - the base word from which other words are formed often by adding prefixes or suffixes
Antonym - a word that has the opposite meaning to another word
Common misconception
Pupils may think that all words with prefixes must have a recgonisable root word.
Look at some words with the focus prefixes that do not have a recognisable root word. Discuss how the meaning of the prefix can still support children with understanding the meaning of the word, e.g. translate or transmit.
You can play games with dictionaries, finding as many words as possible with a certain prefix, as well as locating the defintion of the prefix .
