Key learning points
- Many sports in French are cognates but their pronunciation is quite different and therefore needs practice.
- Use 'aimer' + 'le, la' to say which sport you like e.g. 'j'aime le football'.
- Use 'jouer' + 'à + le, la' to say which sport you play e.g. 'je joue au football'.
- You can join two clauses together to form longer sentences e.g. 1) 'Quand il fait beau ...' 2) '... je joue au tennis'.
Keywords
Jouer - French verb meaning 'to play playing'
Quand - French conjunction/adverb meaning 'when'
Common misconception
To express 'I play tennis' I say 'je joue le tennis'.
To express 'I play' with any singular sport, you use 'à + le, la' after the verb e.g. 'je joue au tennis', 'je joue à la pétanque'.
When teaching sports it is always fun to invent an action to go with each one, choreographing a routine which becomes very familiar and helps students to recall the correct pronunciation of these cognates.
