Lesson details
Key learning points
- Powers of 10 and their multiples can be subtracted using the language of unitising.
- Known facts can be used alongside unitising to subtract powers of 10 and their multiples.
- Subtraction of powers of 10 and their multiples can be represented on a number line.
Keywords
Million - One million is composed of one thousand thousands. 1,000 × 1,000 = 1,000,000 We write one million as a one followed by six zeros.
Unitise - When we unitise, we treat groups that contain, or represent, the same numbers of things as ‘units’ or ‘ones’.
Power of 10 - A power of 10 is when 10 is multiplied by itself a certain number of times.
Common misconception
Children may struggle with the language of unitising.
Encourage children to read aloud and spot what they notice - which known fact can they see - what is the same/different?
Children need to be secure with known number facts to 20 to ensure they can unitise successfully minimising overload. Children need to be aware of the structure: if one part remains the same but the whole increases by an amount then the difference will increase by the same amount.
