Use column addition to add numbers by regrouping ones
I can use column addition to add numbers by regrouping ones.
Lesson details
Key learning points
- Start with the ones column so that regrouping can be represented
- If the sum of the ones digits is ten or greater, regrouping is needed
- Any complete tens are regrouped into the tens column
Keywords
Column addition - Column addition is a way of adding numbers by writing a number below another.
Regroup - Regroup means moving an amount to make a calculation easier.
Common misconception
Pupils may regroup incorrectly, forget to write the regrouped ten or forget to add any regrouped tens when calculating the total for the tens column.
Emphasise that the regrouped number is a ten and that it needs to be added to the tens total. If necessary, revisit the use of base ten blocks.
Pupils may find base ten blocks helpful, particularly at the start of the session. Ensure that pupils understand regrouping before moving on to introduce the more abstract version of the column addition algorithm.
