- If 3 plus 2 is equal to 5 then 3 one-hundreds plus 2 one-hundreds is equal to 5 one-hundreds.
- Adding multiples of 100 can be represented in different ways.
Keywords
Multiple - A multiple is the result of multiplying a number by another whole number.
Common misconception
Pupils may initially find it tricky to use known facts to add multiples of 100
When explaining that we can use 3 ones + 6 ones = 9 ones to find 3 hundreds + 6 hundreds = ___, stress that the only thing that changes here is the noun.
Manipulatives such as place value counters and ten frames may help some pupils to visualise the addition of multiples of 100 Encourage pupils to use these to support their thinking and help them use known facts to work out answers to problems posed (e.g. 800 + 700 is equal to 800 + 200 + 500).
