Regular - A regular polygon has all sides equal and all angles equal.
Irregular - An irregular polygon does not have all sides equal and does not have all angles equal.
Common misconception
Pupils might get confused by shapes which are almost polygons - for example, one of the lines is slightly curved - or almost regular - for example, one side is slightly longer than the others.
These are either not polygons or are irregular polygons. Ensure pupils are clear about that. Examples and non-examples are given, including 'almost' examples. You may wish to include more and display these in your Maths environment.
There is a lot of technical language in this lesson. Consider the most effective ways to introduce this to your children and how best to ensure its continued use, such as displaying key vocabulary or developing stem sentences with children.
